What are the standard mattress sizes in Canada?

Canada uses six standard mattress sizes: Twin (38" x 75"), Twin XL (38" x 80"), Double (53" x 75"), Queen (60" x 80"), King (76" x 80") and California King (72" x 84"). Queen is the most common size in Canadian homes. Every size is listed below in inches and centimetres, with the name mix-ups explained.

🔄 The name mix-ups, translated

Mattress lingo doesn't always make sense. These pairs are the same size wearing different names:

King vs California King: the fact most people get backwards

A standard King is actually the bigger mattress — 6,080 square inches versus the California King's 6,048. The Cal King trades four inches of width for four inches of extra length, which only matters if someone in the bed is over about 6'2". 🚐 RV, camper and custom sizes

RV mattresses rarely match household sizes — the common "RV short queen" runs about 60" x 74–75", and bunks, cab-overs and older trailers can be anything. Can I use US mattress sizes in Canada?

Yes — Canadian and US standard sizes are the same, so US-bought bedding and frames fit Canadian mattresses of the same named size. The one practical difference: California King is far less common in Canadian stores, so frames and sheets for it take more hunting. (Our foam shop can custom-build one to the exact 72" x 84" dimension.)

⚠️ The size mistakes we see most

Buying a Double for a couple. A Double gives each adult 26.5" of width — narrower than a crib. Couples sleep better from Queen up.

Measuring the old mattress instead of the room. Leave at least 24" of walking space on each side you need to walk on, and check doorways, stairwells and tight corners for the delivery path.

Forgetting the frame. A new mattress on a sagging 20-year-old frame inherits the sag. Check our bed frames and box springs if yours is past it.

Assuming bigger is always better. A King in a 10' x 10' room leaves you shuffling sideways around the bed. Queen fits most Canadian bedrooms with room to live.

Which size is right for you?

Couples: Queen is the standard; King if the budget and the room allow it; Split King if you disagree on firmness or want an adjustable base each. Kids and teens: Twin to start, Double if the room fits it — it survives the growth spurts. Guest rooms: Double or Queen. Tall sleepers (6'2"+): Twin XL solo, or California King for couples. What's the difference between a Double and a Full?

Nothing — they're two names for the same 53" x 75" mattress. "Double" is the more common term in Canada.

Is a Twin the same as a Single?

Yes. Twin and Single both mean 38" x 75". Retailers use the names interchangeably.

What's the biggest mattress size in Canada?

The standard King (76" x 80") has the most total surface area. The California King is longer (84") but narrower, and comes in slightly smaller overall.

What is a Split King?

Two Twin XL mattresses side by side on one frame — together the same footprint as a King. Popular with adjustable bases and couples who want different firmness on each side.

Is a Double big enough for a couple?

It works in a pinch, but each person gets about 26.5" of width. Most couples who upgrade from a Double to a Queen say it's the best sleep money they've spent.

Do all brands make every size?
