🛏️ California King vs King: What’s the Difference?

California King vs King: which one is bigger?

The standard King (called Eastern King) is the bigger mattress overall — 76" x 80" gives you 6,080 square inches, while the California King's 72" x 84" totals 6,048. The Cal King trades four inches of width for four inches of length. In Canada, "King" always means Eastern King unless a store says otherwise.

📏 The dimensions, side by side

Size Inches (W x L) CM (W x L) Total area
King (Eastern) 76" x 80" 193 x 203 cm 6,080 sq in
California King 72" x 84" 183 x 213 cm 6,048 sq in

That surprises most people: the "California" name sounds bigger, but a standard King actually has 32 more square inches of sleeping surface. The real question isn't which is bigger — it's whether you need width or length.

✅ Why we stock the Eastern King

At Mr. Liquidator we carry the King (Eastern) size, for practical Canadian reasons:

  • It's the widest mattress available — maximum space for couples (and the dog that shows up at 6am)
  • Bedding and frames for Eastern Kings are easy to find anywhere in Canada; Cal King sheets and frames usually mean special ordering
  • Most BC homes are built with bedrooms that fit an Eastern King's footprint, not the longer California version
  • The Cal King's extra length only pays off if someone in the bed is around 6'4" or taller

🤔 Should you get a California King anyway?

Honestly — probably not. Unless you're very tall and have a long, narrow bedroom, a California King in Canada means harder-to-find bedding, fewer frame options, and a trickier move up the stairs. Most customers who come in asking for a Cal King leave with a standard King and more width for their money.

If you genuinely need the Cal King footprint — a very tall sleeper, or a frame you already own — our foam shop custom-builds foam mattresses to any dimension, including 72" x 84", cut to order in Chilliwack.

Frequently asked questions

Is a California King bigger than a King?

No — a standard King has slightly more total area (6,080 vs 6,048 square inches). The California King is 4" longer but 4" narrower.

Will King sheets fit a California King?

No. The four-inch differences in both directions mean Cal King bedding is its own size — one of the practical reasons Eastern King is easier to live with in Canada.

Do you sell California King mattresses?

We stock Eastern King mattresses from Beautyrest, Serta and Rockwell. For a true California King footprint, our custom foam shop builds 72" x 84" foam mattresses to order.

Who should actually choose a California King?

Sleepers around 6'4" or taller whose feet hang off a standard King, in a bedroom that's longer than it is wide. For everyone else, the standard King's extra width wins.
