Mattress Buying Guide 2026 — Canadian Sizes, Firmness, Brand Comparisons
A complete, plain-English mattress buying guide for Canadians. Written by the team at Mr. Liquidator Mattress Outlet — Chilliwack BC's #1 mattress store and authorized Beautyrest & Serta dealer since 2012. This guide answers the questions we get asked every day at the showroom. Last reviewed June 7, 2026.
Quick answer: how to buy a mattress in 5 steps
- Identify your sleep style. Back/stomach sleepers want firm to medium-firm; side sleepers want medium to plush; combo sleepers fall in the middle.
- Set your budget. Boxed mattresses (Twin to King) start at $249. Mid-tier branded mattresses (Beautyrest Isla/Eryx, Serta Celebrate) sit between $899 and $1,099. Premium (Beautyrest Centennial, Serta iComfort) starts around $1,499 and goes up to $2,500+.
- Test in person. Lie on at least 3 candidates for 10 minutes each. Yes, ten minutes. Salespeople who don't let you do this don't have your interests in mind.
- Verify the warranty. 10 years from an authorized dealer is the standard. Anything less from an authorized dealer is unusual.
- Buy from an authorized dealer. Avoid third-party marketplaces, gray-market resellers, and stores selling "factory liquidation" mattresses with no warranty traceable to the original brand.
What makes a good mattress?
Three things, in this order:
- Spine alignment. The mattress should hold your spine in roughly the same shape it has when you stand. Too firm pushes your hips up and pinches your shoulders if you're a side sleeper. Too plush lets your hips sink and curves your lower back.
- Pressure relief. The surface needs to cushion shoulders, hips, and elbows without bottoming out. Memory foam and pillow tops do this best; tight-top mattresses do it least.
- Durability. A mattress is a 7-10 year purchase. Coil count, foam density, and edge support matter more than fancy fabric. A 700+ pocketed coil mattress from a recognized brand outperforms a 1500-coil no-name unit nine times out of ten.
Firmness guide: how firm should your mattress be?
Firmness is rated on a 1-10 scale, where 1 is the softest and 10 is the firmest. The industry uses a rough convention:
| Rating | Feel | Best for | Common labels |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1-2 | Ultra plush | Lightweight side sleepers (under 130 lbs); chronic shoulder pain | "Soft", "Ultra Plush", "Plush Pillow Top" |
| 3-4 | Plush | Most side sleepers; couples with one side sleeper; combo sleepers leaning soft | "Plush", "Pillow Top Plush", "Euro Top Plush" |
| 5-6 | Medium / Medium-Firm | Combo sleepers; back sleepers wanting some cushion; couples with mixed preferences | "Medium", "Pillow Top Medium", "Tight Top Medium" |
| 7-8 | Firm | Back & stomach sleepers; heavier bodies (200+ lbs); lower back pain | "Firm", "Tight Top Firm", "Extra Firm" |
| 9-10 | Extra Firm | Strong back support need; stomach sleepers with lumbar issues; clinical recommendations | "Extra Firm", "Orthopedic" |

Beautyrest vs Serta vs Rockwell — how to choose
Three brands cover 95% of what we sell. They each lead with a different design philosophy.
| Brand | Design philosophy | Strengths | Trade-offs | Who it's for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Beautyrest | Pocketed-coil core, firmer feel, strong edge support | Excellent for couples (motion isolation), heavier bodies, back & stomach sleepers | Firmer-feeling than competitors; side sleepers who weigh under 150 lbs may find them too firm | Most back & stomach sleepers; couples; buyers prioritizing durability |
| Serta | Memory foam or coil + foam hybrid; softer plush feel; cooling tech | Side sleepers, hot sleepers (iComfort line), pressure-point relief | Memory foam can sleep warmer than coil; some plusher models have edges that "give" when you sit | Side sleepers; hot sleepers; combo sleepers wanting cushion |
| Rockwell | All-foam or hybrid, ships boxed, value-priced | Affordability, kids' rooms, guest rooms, RVs, Airbnb hosts | Less long-term support than premium coil; not ideal for heavy sleepers over 250 lbs | Budget buyers, secondary bedrooms, short-term rentals |
How long should a mattress last?
Industry guidance is 7-10 years. Reality depends on three things:
- Build quality. A 900-coil Beautyrest typically lasts 9-12 years. A budget foam mattress lasts 5-8 years.
- Use. A primary bed sees 2,500-3,000 sleep hours per year. A guest-room mattress sees 100. The guest-room mattress will outlast the primary by years.
- Support. A mattress on a sagging box spring or slatted frame with gaps wider than 4 inches wears out faster than one on a solid platform.
When should you replace your mattress?
Not by the calendar — by your body. Replace your mattress when:
- You wake up stiff, sore, or with new lower back pain that didn't exist a year ago.
- You sleep better in hotels than at home.
- You see a visible sag, dip, or impression deeper than 1.5 inches when you remove the sheets.
- Your partner's movement now wakes you when it didn't before.
- You hear creaks, squeaks, or pops you didn't hear in year one.
- You're allergic and the symptoms are getting worse despite cleaning.
Mattress construction types — what's the difference?
Five common build types cover most of what's on the market:
| Type | What it is | Pros | Cons |
|---|---|---|---|
| Innerspring | Traditional coil core with thin comfort layers | Bouncy feel, good airflow, cheap to manufacture | Less motion isolation, less pressure relief, shorter life |
| Pocketed coil | Individually-wrapped coils + thicker comfort layers (Beautyrest core tech) | Excellent motion isolation, better pressure relief, longer lifespan | Heavier, harder to move; mid-to-premium price tier |
| Memory foam | All-foam construction, body-conforming | Best pressure relief, no motion transfer, ideal for couples | Can sleep warm without cooling tech; "stuck in the mattress" feel some dislike |
| Hybrid | Pocketed coil base + memory foam comfort layers | Best of both — cooling airflow + pressure relief; the modern standard | Most expensive build type at equivalent quality |
| Latex | Natural or synthetic latex foam construction | Naturally cooling, very long lifespan (12-15 years), hypoallergenic | Expensive, heavier, less common; specialty product (we custom-cut to order) |
Warranty 101 — what's actually covered?
Mattress warranties are surprisingly specific. Here's what an authorized-dealer warranty covers, in plain language:
- Sagging beyond a specific depth. Typically 1.5 inches measured with the mattress sitting on a flat surface, with no weight on it. This is the most common claim.
- Structural defects. Coils popping out, foam separating, fabric tears with no obvious external cause.
- Manufacturing defects within the first year. Almost any quality issue traceable to manufacturing.
What warranties typically don't cover:
- Comfort preference ("I don't like the feel"). This is not a defect.
- Stains. Any visible stain typically voids the warranty. Use a mattress protector from day one.
- Damage from inadequate support. If your box spring sags or your platform has gaps wider than 4 inches, the manufacturer can void the warranty.
- Normal body impressions less than 1.5 inches. Mattresses softening over the first year is expected, not defective.
