Most branded hotel beds in North America trace back to just two manufacturers. The famous ones — Marriott's bed, Westin's "Heavenly Bed" — are built by Simmons (Beautyrest) partners, and Serta's hospitality division supplies hotels across the continent. That mattress you slept so well on wasn't magic. It was a mid-firm commercial build from a company whose retail lines are sitting in Canadian stores right now, often hundreds of dollars apart for comparable beds depending on where you buy.
Here's what's actually different about hotel spec, which names to look for, and how to pay the lowest of those prices.
The brands behind hotel beds
Marriott and Westin sell their beds to the public through their own online bed stores, and both stores sell Beautyrest-built mattresses — that's public, checkable, and the reason "Beautyrest" is the name you'll most often find on a hotel mattress label. Serta's hospitality division is the other major player, supplying hotel programs across North America.
The versions Canadians search for — Beautyrest hotel collection, Serta hotel mattress — are consumer editions of those hospitality programs, sold through regular retail. Same manufacturers, retail packaging, retail markup.
What's actually different about a hotel mattress
- Durability first. A home mattress sees the same one or two sleepers every night. A hotel bed gets a different body every night, plus sitting, luggage, and kids jumping. Hospitality spec uses denser foams, stronger coil tempering, and reinforced edges so year three still feels like year one.
- Medium-firm by design. A hotel can't ask each guest their firmness preference, so it buys the middle of the curve: supportive enough for back sleepers, forgiving enough for side sleepers. If you don't know what firmness you like, hotel spec is the statistically safe pick.
- The "hotel feel" is a system, not a slab. That cloud feeling is mattress + topper + protector + high-thread-count layers working together. If you loved a specific hotel's bed, replicate the stack. Sometimes the $60 topper is what you actually remember.
- Two-sided options still exist. Some hospitality lines are still built flippable, so housekeeping can rotate and flip for roughly double the usable life. Most consumer retail lines dropped this years ago. If you want a flippable bed, hospitality-grade is where they still live — ask specifically.
When a hotel mattress is the wrong buy
Honesty first: hotel spec isn't automatically the best mattress for you.
- If you're a dedicated side sleeper who loves a plush, contouring feel, hotel mid-firm may read as "fine" rather than "great." Firmness preference beats pedigree.
- If your current mattress is decent and what you miss is the hotel feeling, start with the topper and bedding. It's a tenth of the price of a new bed.
- A "hotel" name on a label is marketing until the spec sheet says otherwise: look for coil count and construction, foam density, edge reinforcement, and warranty terms, not the word "hotel."
Buying one in Canada without overpaying
The same class of bed reaches you through three channels at three prices:
- The hotel brand's own bed store. The real program mattress at full program pricing, often shipped from the US with duties and freight on top.
- Retail "hotel collection" lines. Canadian stores carry consumer editions of the hospitality programs at the usual retail markup.
- The liquidation channel. Overstock, discontinued covers, and showroom transitions mean the same brand-new, factory-warrantied mattress sells for hundreds less. That's our whole business: new stock, never used, priced to move.
The gap is not small. Beautyrest models carrying $1,195–$1,495 manufacturer's suggested retails sell from our Chilliwack floor at $449–$699 — brand-new, full warranty. And for the pure hotel-spec option, our Rockwell Hotel Plus line (an 8.5" pocket-coil pillow-top built to commercial spec) runs $299–$399 by size, with a couple hundred units in the warehouse at any given time.

FAQ
What mattress do most hotels use?
Most branded North American hotel beds are built by Simmons (Beautyrest) or Serta's hospitality division. Marriott's and Westin's own bed stores both sell Beautyrest-built mattresses.
Are hotel mattresses firmer than regular ones?
They cluster around medium-firm — the setting that suits the most body types — and are built to a durability spec (denser foams, reinforced edges) rather than a firmness extreme.
Can I buy the actual mattress a hotel uses?
Yes: through the hotel brand's bed store at full program price, through retail "hotel collection" lines, or through liquidation stock of the same manufacturers' lines for less. All three are new, warrantied product.
Why did I sleep better at the hotel than at home?
Often it's the whole stack — a mid-firm mattress in good condition, plus a topper, protector, and quality linens — and the fact that hotel beds get replaced on a schedule instead of at year fifteen.
